Oceanside will attempt to end Long Island’s longest active winning streak when it visits undefeated Massapequa on Saturday at 2 p.m. at Massapequa High School.
Massapequa enters the Nassau Conference I matchup at 4–0 and has won 27 consecutive games. The Chiefs have defeated Port Washington, 42–12; Syosset, 37–7; Garden City, 21–14; and Hempstead, 50–12. The victory over Garden City ended the Trojans’ state-record 68-game winning streak. Massapequa avoided an emotional letdown five days later, producing its highest point total of the season against Hempstead. Michael Castellano rushed for 191 yards and four touchdowns in that victory. The performance demonstrated the depth of a Massapequa offense that can control the game on the ground while creating explosive plays through the passing game. The Chiefs have scored 150 points and allowed only 45 through four games.
Oceanside enters at 3–1, with its only loss recorded as a forfeit against Carey. On the field, the Sailors have defeated Farmingdale, 37–29; East Meadow, 42–14; and Syosset, 36–7. Running back Chace Morris remains the center of Oceanside’s offense. He rushed for 206 yards and two touchdowns against Syosset after producing 200 yards and two scores in the season-opening victory over Farmingdale.
Oceanside’s key will be preventing Massapequa from controlling the line of scrimmage. The Sailors must establish Morris, avoid obvious passing situations and keep the Chiefs’ offense on the sideline.
Massapequa must tackle well against Oceanside’s physical running game and avoid looking ahead. The Chiefs defeated the Sailors in last season’s Nassau Conference I championship game, but Oceanside handed Massapequa its only loss over the previous three seasons.
Prediction: Massapequa 28, Oceanside 21. Oceanside’s rushing attack should keep the game competitive, but Massapequa’s balance, defensive strength and experience in close games give the Chiefs the advantage.
