Two undefeated Nassau football powers will meet Saturday, Sept. 26, at 5 p.m. at Hofstra University’s Shuart Stadium. Garden City and Massapequa are both 2–0, but this is more than an early-season crossover game: Garden City has won five straight Nassau Conference II titles, while Massapequa has won the past three Long Island Class I championships.
Garden City enters with 68 consecutive victories. Its streak stood at 66 before the season, and the Trojans have since beaten Calhoun, 24–13, and MacArthur, 35–7. Massapequa has been equally convincing this fall, defeating Port Washington, 42–12, and Syosset, 37–7. This set up a meeting between two teams accustomed to controlling games.
Garden City’s offense has several ways to do it. Quarterback Brayden Robertiello threw three touchdown passes and ran for another against MacArthur. Anthony Asaro scored twice, and Ben Smith caught two touchdowns in the 35–7 win. The Trojans’ key is to stay balanced and avoid giving Massapequa’s defense chances to dictate the game.
Massapequa showed how quickly it can take control against Syosset, scoring 30 first-quarter points. Jason LaRosa broke a long touchdown run on the Chiefs’ first offensive play, while Justin Farrell contributed a safety and a fumble-return touchdown. To beat Garden City, Massapequa needs that defensive pressure without surrendering the long, steady drives that have helped the Trojans build their streak.
For Garden City, the challenge is handling Massapequa’s explosive starts. For Massapequa, it is staying patient if the first big play does not come. Both teams have championship credentials; Saturday gives them a rare chance to measure them against each other.
Prediction: Garden City 28, Massapequa 24. Massapequa has the firepower to end the streak, but Garden City’s balance gives the Trojans a slight edge in a close game.
