The first full weekend of PSAL league play gave us statement wins at the top, a double-overtime battle in 3A and a clearer picture of which teams may be ready to contend.
Eagle Academy II Makes a Statement
Eagle Academy II entered PSAL play already carrying one of the strongest résumés in the city. Then the Eagles beat Abraham Lincoln 42-0. Anthony Caratelli completed 14 of 15 passes for 269 yards and four touchdowns as Eagle II moved to 3-0. The margin was especially notable against a Lincoln team that entered the weekend at No. 17 in the ATS Downstate Top 25.
Erasmus Gets Back on Track
After opening against two strong New Jersey opponents, Erasmus Hall finally got the result it needed. The Dutchmen beat JFK Campus 43-6, picking up their first victory and opening PSAL play with a convincing performance. Now comes the real measuring stick: Eagle Academy II.
New Utrecht Wins the Thriller
New Utrecht and defending 3A champion Sheepshead Bay needed double overtime before the Utes emerged with a 35-28 victory. Kenneth Shaw finished with 156 total yards and two touchdowns as New Utrecht added another significant win to an early-season résumé that already included a victory over 4A Port Richmond.
Around the League
Curtis stayed unbeaten with a 43-12 win over South Shore. Tottenville bounced back emphatically with a 59-6 win over Port Richmond and A.P. Randolph knocked off James Madison 16-6.
