Garden City has changed opponents, seasons and graduating classes.
The winning hasn’t changed.
The Trojans opened their season by beating Calhoun 24–13 and extending their state-record winning streak to 67 games. Anthony Asaro led the way with 160 rushing yards and a touchdown on 17 carries. (Newsday)
Wantagh produced perhaps the most dramatic result of the Nassau weekend. Plainedge jumped ahead 26–7 in the second quarter, but Wantagh stormed back for a 36–33 victory. Luke Martini rushed for 130 yards and two touchdowns and added 35 receiving yards in the comeback. (MaxPreps.com)
There were statement scores elsewhere.
Oceanside beat East Meadow 42–14. Port Washington scored 54 in a win over Syosset. South Side shut out Elmont 36–0, Manhasset handled Mineola 47–7, Plainview-Old Bethpage JFK blanked Herricks/Wheatley/Roslyn 33–0 and Mepham beat MacArthur 34–6.
THE ATS TAKEAWAY
Until somebody actually beats Garden City, the road in Nassau still runs through the Trojans.
But Wantagh’s comeback immediately makes the Warriors one of the most intriguing teams coming out of opening weekend, while Oceanside and Port Washington both showed they can put points on the board quickly.
WHAT TO WATCH NEXT
MacArthur gets Garden City next, while Mepham meets Calhoun.
